The obverse
in the center — the Emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two headed eagle designed by I.Bilibin, lower — the semicircular inscription — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA) framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ПЯТЬДЕСЯТ РУБЛЕЙ» (FIFTY RUBLES), at the bottom — «1999», the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right — the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.
The reverse
to the left — elements of Moscow panorama with the views of the Moscow Kremlin, to the right — the Tiananmen Gate («The Gate of the Sky Tranquillity») in Peking, at the top — the rising sun, under it — the inscription in two lines:«50 ЛЕТ» (50 YEARS), at the bottom — the inscription in four lines: «УСТАНОВЛЕНИЯ ДИПЛОМАТИЧЕСКИХ ОТНОШЕНИЙ С КНР» (ESTABLISHING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE PRC).

On October 1, 1949 the formation of the People’s Republic of China has been proclaimed in Peking from the tribune above the Tiananmen Gate in the presence of 300000 inhabitants of the capital. On the next day, on October 2, 1949, Moscow was the first who had declared the recognition of the PRC and the readiness to establish diplomatic relations.
